In a little white office next to the house in Fairchance where she grew up, Dr. Marcy Goisse’s grandfather was a doctor for generations of local families. Dr. Mark Montgomery was a classic country doctor who made house calls and worked side by side with his wife, Sue, to serve the community.
As a child, Dr. Goisse saw patients come and go from her grandfather’s office but didn’t yet understand the impact he had on his patients – or her. It was not until she was a teenager deciding what path in life that she heard her grandfather's calling 60 years before her — to practice medicine and care for her community.
“I knew family medicine was the only choice for me.” Dr. Goisse explains, “I wanted to know and treat the entire family and the entire person, just like my grandfather did.”
Decades ago, a doctor would hang their name on a shingle and start seeing patients. In today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment, the model is for physicians to work for large organizations or hospitals. Dr. Goisse bucked the industry trend, followed in her grandfather’s footsteps, and opened her own private medical office as an independent family practitioner.Montgomery Medical opened its doors as an independent corporation in February of 2013.
“I am thankful to be back in the community my grandfather served,” Dr. Goisse says. “Montgomery Medical is not only named after him but also truly inspired by him.”
“One day, I was very sick. Dr. Montgomery had his nurse, Sue, (his wife) give me a B12, liver, and iron shot. That worked!!! I’m so glad that they were able to work together to help me feel better!” J.R.T.
“My Mom went to school w/him. Mark delivered my 4 children. I had a daughter with colic and a 1-year-old boy + 3-year-old. Sue was so concerned because of my lack of sleep, she stopped at my house and told me to go lay down while she watched the kids. They were awesome to me.” K.E.S.
“My Mom had 5 daughters – 4 (delivered by) Dr. Mark and 1 (by) Dr. Bruce. Dr. Mark called us all CODS – I think they were a family up on the mountain. My Dad & Grand-pap use to go him to visit on weekends. I loved Dr. Mark, however, I’m sorry to say your Grandmother was not very nice.” Anonymous
